Painting Yellow

Anyone got good advice on painting yellow ? Reason i'm asking is I've finally decided I want to build an Imperial fists army ( can't bare to look at the ultramarines I painted so far , have Matt Ward to thank for that ). I painted Lysander a couple of months ago and noticed I had 3 problems :

  1. Finding a shade of yellow I like ,  I've decided more of a dark shade .
  2. Yellow is a very transparent colour that requires a large number of layers to build up the tone
  3. Cleaning up mistakes is also a pain .

Would be great if anyone can recommend a primer and paints ( Citadel or other ) as well as a strategy to tackle yellow .

i've had the same problem with yellows for a while so i kind of avoided using it but a friend of mine recently started an eldar army and the yellow foundation, Iyanden darksun tends to work pretty well

There are really 2 choices to make...white primer or black. Once you make this choice the rest is pretty straight forward. White primer gives you a vibrant yellow and you can go straight from primer to a sunburst yellow. If you do black primer you will need to go to a scorched brown coat ( probably more a glaze then a coat) and then go to Itrusk Yellow and can off with your sunburst or golden yellow. The one thing I like about black is you down have to go over and paint all weapons and joints black again like you would with white primer, but white primer eliminates the brown coat....black primer will give you a darker model if that is your goal. Oh yeah don't forget your wash, do a griifon sepia as it has an orange tint

Be prepared for a slow march. I had this army once and cheated by priming all white then using the old GW yellow ink. You can still make a wash by super thinning the sunburst yellow.

Luck!

Ohhh I know ur pain! I had such problems with my orcs and gobs army! The arachnarok spider head, and the noght gonlin shields were horrible to paint! My advice?

1- white primer
2- badab wash to c details
3- DRY brush, more effective for small models! U can always paint over light colors easy tjan a light color over dark!
3- sunburst yellow is great!
4- DO NOT WASH over yellow!

Thanks for the tips guys  , will try out these pointers and let you know how it works out . I'd previously watched Lester Bersleys's Imperial Fists tutorial and was not happy with the colours and tone . I did find another tutorial that goes along the same lines as Kagnor and Omar's pointers ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DsuanLz2PE&feature=relmfu ) , I do like the tone and shades of yellow but I think she's gone a bit too far with the weathering for tabeltop quality .

I would like to add that washing the model is ok, but you are appliing the wash to areas that enhance the yellow. you would also need to use a thinned wash to keep the tone low and keep the wash only in the cracks and crevices. I prefer a baal red wash with a bit of sepia.
