wood work models
IMHO scratchbuilt models are fun and wouldn't be a problem fielding it on fun games, unless your opponent is a cheeky jack*ss that wouldn't allow you to do so. on the otherhand, tournament play has different take on this stuff.... some may allow you to field a couple, and some are strict as a whackstick. so it depends, but heck if you're playin up against me its cool... no probs even f you field an emperator titan scratchbuilt as long as its decently assembled and painted and not juz some scrapjunk you'll call a battlewagon ^_^x

This is the most important thing. Scratch-built is fine but it has to be on par with the rest of the field or next thing you'll see horrible titan shoeboxes everywhere... wouldn't be cool for anybody.
As far as tournament use goes it'd be fine if the level of the conversion is good and you're using ~25% GW pieces.
the conversion will be the excact same as the model we are doing except the really small details but it will look the same and the size will be the same too :D
Well it'll certainly be interesting to see the results :)

Use some of the imperial bitz you have like the imperial symbol on from and the barrels and hatches. That would look great. I know there is a company that sold wood drop pods before GW released the kits...those were awesome looking. Your going to have to really seal the model before you paint it or the wood grain will not only show up, but will also absorb all the paint. Maybe coat the whole model in Elmer's white glue?
And by the way. The basilisk uses the same chassis as the griffon and manticore. I would make the guns a separate piece so you can swap the weapons out, OR buy the basilisk kit and have you dad use it as templates for the wood cutting and make a 2 so you could field a squadron of them and if he make 3 griffon weapons, 3 manticores weapons, and 2 extra basilisk cannon you have essentially 9 models for the price of 1 and you have all the little bitz to use!
